Peace -
Leedz Edutainment came to me with the opportunity to remix a classic track from the back catalog to kick off celebrations for their 20th anniversary. New single Rap Tragic (kane major remix) FT. Craig G, Al-J & DJ Emoh Betta is out now all all streaming platforms. Leedz recounts the tale, “There was a little bit of controversy about this track because we had a show with Craig that got canceled and he delayed on sending his verse. Then he just showed up in Boston one day and recorded two fire verses and we made a banger. I wanted to give it a fresh coat of paint fifteen years later” Al-J continues, "Craig G came through like a "G" that he is. Battle Tested!!" It was truly an honor to get the opportunity to remix the Juice Crew legend. And to add icing on the cake, I get to be back on a track with both Al-J and DJ Emoh Betta for the first time in 17 years or so.
For those that don't know, we had a group - Soular Prominence - (grimace emoji) along with fellow Blak Madeen spitter Yusuf Abdul-Mateen and B1 rounding out the line up. We did shows mostly in and around Boston in some form or another for about 4 years. I was spitting and handling the recording as well as beat making, We dropped some mixtapes and finally a full length album in 2007 and then disbanded shortly thereafter (life shit, etc). But the album is on streaming, we had some cool features on there, both on the MC and production tip. Some early beats from cats who are pretty legendary in the underground scene now. Some of those tracks aren't mixed great so they may not appreciate having their name associated but its out there for you to dig for.
Emoh continued killing it as part of the turntablist collective harbanger (pronounced “harbinger”) a unique collection of seven DJs performing as a single unit. Under the direction of legendary DJ Rob Swift, each DJ plays their part, using the turntable as an instrument to bring seven or more different sounds together into one piece.
Both Al-J and Yusuf went on to form Blak Madeen, an Islam inspired duo that evokes the “conscious era” of the late 90's hip-hop. They are currently signed to Chuck D's boutique label - SpitSlam Record Group.
Some history to go along with the latest track. Hope you enjoy!
